Beatty Votes to Advance Public Safety Package
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Congresswoman and Congressional Black Caucus Chair Joyce Beatty (OH-03) voted to pass a package of public safety bills. At the negotiating table, Beatty pushed for and secured funding for de-escalation training, oversight by the Department of Justice, and an emphasis on mental health and breaking the cycle of violence. After the vote, Beatty issued the following statement:
“Today, House Democrats passed a package of bills designed to break the cycle of violence in our communities and advance public safety nationwide. We know that improving our nation’s deeply flawed system of policing requires both resources and accountability measures. At a time when we have genuine concerns about the reliability and effectiveness of our police, Democrats are providing the support, resources, and guardrails that departments need to maintain a qualified and properly trained pool of officers. Throughout the negotiation process, we have consulted with external groups and civil rights advocates, and their dedication to public safety has undoubtedly made this a better package for everyone. Critically, the package includes strong provisions for mental health, prioritizes the needs of victims, and will work to end cyclical violence in our communities. I will continue to work with my colleagues to build on the foundation we established today.”
