Beatty Issues Statement on Shooting of Donovan Lewis

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Congresswoman and Congressional Black Caucus Chair Joyce Beatty (OH-03) issued the following statement on the death of Donovan Lewis:

“I am horrified to see another young, unarmed Black man killed by police in our city. In this painful loss, my heart goes out to his family. Donovan Lewis was shot by the officer less than one second after his bedroom door was opened. It appears to be clear the officer involved did not take the necessary time to assess the situation before choosing to employ deadly force. Following the shooting, Mayor Ginther and Chief Bryant have remained transparent and acted swiftly, ordering BCI to conduct an independent investigation. As we await their findings, I stand with the Columbus community in our calls for justice and accountability.”
