Statement on Protests Against Public Officials

May 8, 2020

COLUMBUS, OH—Following reports of armed protesters and individuals displaying racist and xenophobic signs recently, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) issued the following statement:

"I have watched, with deepening concern and alarm, the open expression of anti-Semitism, bigotry, and prejudice—even offensive symbols—aimed at not only members of the Jewish community but our entire community. These displays of intolerance are a threat to us all. While I fully support the constitutional right of freedom of speech, I find it reprehensible for people to use that as an excuse for unwarranted attacks and intimidation. I am disgusted by the hate targeting Dr. Acton and her family at her house."
