WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) joined House Assistant Minority Leader Joe Neguse and prominent reproductive rights champions from across the House Democratic Caucus to address recent Republican attacks on fertility care and reproductive rights. The press conference highlighted efforts by extreme MAGA Republicans in several states to endanger reproductive and fertility health programs, criminalize abortion services and prosecute healthcare providers. These measures, though widely unpopular, threaten women's access to essential healthcare services, including but not limited to abortion.
Assistant Leader Neguse and the Congresswoman were joined by Congresswoman Diana DeGette, Co-Chair of the House Pro-Choice Caucus, Congresswoman Lori Trahan, Co-Chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee, Congresswoman Lois Frankel, Chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus, and Congresswoman Susan Wild, author of bipartisan legislation codifying an individual’s right to assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), including in-vitro fertilization (IVF).
During the press conference, Congresswoman Beatty emphasized the importance of all Americans understanding what’s at stake in the current healthcare environment. “As we know reproductive healthcare is not just a women’s issue, it's a family issue and it involves men and women,” said Congresswoman Beatty. “And we proved that in August and November in the great state of Ohio when we fought back and prevailed.” She discussed the impact of the fetal personhood movement on Republican aggression in reproductive healthcare. Beatty also underscored the broader implications of these attacks on healthcare services for low-income and uninsured women. When asked about overcoming Republican resistance to reproductive healthcare, Beatty reemphasized the importance of public engagement and expressed optimism that Democrats could better protect women and their families if they regained control of the House of Representatives.
