January 13, 2023

Beatty proposed and secured funding in Congress to establish a fellowship program to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion at the United States Commercial Service

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) and the U.S. Department of Commerce announced the creation of a new global affairs fellowship program within the Global Markets unit at the International Trade Administration to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the Foreign Commercial Service. Upon completion of the fellowship, students will become full-time employees in the Global Markets unit of the International Trade Administration. Beatty secured the funding with the passage of the Fiscal Year 2023 government funding legislation.

“I am thrilled to have secured federal funding to create a fellowship program at the United States Department of Commerce for historically underrepresented students wishing to pursue a career in foreign commercial service,” said Congresswoman Joyce Beatty. “Our government is strongest when it is representative of the diverse communities we serve. With this program, we will attract and develop new talent for the Department’s Foreign Commercial Service and ensure our workers at the International Trade Administration are fully equipped to support American businesses and industry while achieving a more inclusive public sector that offers opportunities for all.”

“This fellowship program builds upon our current diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility initiatives, and will further ensure that our Commercial Service reflects the diverse array of the American businesses and workers it supports every day, both domestically and abroad,” said U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves. “I would like to extend my thanks to Chairwoman Beatty for her leadership on providing the International Trade Administration with another tool to bring more talented, diverse candidates into public service.”
