Congresswoman Beatty’s Official Statement on the Passing of Maryland Representative Elijah Cummings
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) issued the following statement on the passing of Congressman Elijah Cummings (MD-07):
"I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of my colleague and dear friend, Elijah Cummings. Throughout his decades-long career, Elijah was a model statesman and served the people of Baltimore with unrelenting zeal, dedication, and love.
"The son of sharecroppers, he brought his understanding of the plight and systemic oppression facing too many Americans to Washington and served as an unparalleled spokesman for Congress and the Congressional Black Caucus, which he chaired in the 108th Congress. As Chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, Elijah remained steadfast in his battle to make our government work better for the people. His faith in democracy and in our nation's founding principles was a guiding light in times of doubt and darkness, and his fighting spirit will be sorely missed.
"My heart and prayers are with his wife Maya, children, family, and Maryland's Seventh Congressional District. Rest in power, Elijah."
