Congresswoman Beatty Opposes Republican Tax Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C.The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, H.R. 1, by a vote of 227 to 205. In response, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) issued the following statement:

"Today, I stood with seniors, veterans, students, teachers and countless families by voting against the short-sighted Republican tax scam bill. Under this bill, seniors, the sick and people with disabilities would no longer be able to deduct their medical expenses, while a business that moves overseas would be allowed to deduct its moving costs. Likewise, working college students and teachers purchasing their own classroom's school supplies would be left out in the cold, while the super wealthy would receive a $500 billion tax cut. Finally, the bill would increase taxes on 36 million Americans—and double tax many working families—while the 4,000 wealthiest American families would not pay a penny in estate taxes.

Americans want better jobs, better wages, better opportunities and a better future. That is why Republicans need to work with Democrats to focus on providing permanent tax relief to the middle class and those working hard to reach it, as opposed to padding the pockets of people like President Trump."
