Congresswoman Beatty Denounces President Trump’s Unlawful Executive Order to Freeze Federal Funding

January 28, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) issued the following statement denouncing President Trump’s latest unlawful executive order, which purports to freeze nearly all approved federal grant dollars and loans promised to states, localities, families, and businesses:

“Our democracy is under attack. Yesterday, President Trump announced an unconstitutional freeze on congressionally approved federal funding, halting critical support like public loans and grants across all federal agencies,” said Congresswoman Beatty.

“This unlawful act potentially blocks hundreds of billions of dollars from reaching Ohio’s Third Congressional District. I’ve heard it directly from constituents: Community health centers no longer know if they will continue to receive Medicaid coverage for their patients. Early childhood education providers can't access federal payment portals to get the Head Start funding they need to pay teachers. Local nonprofits that help disabled veterans no longer have financial certainty. These are just a couple of examples demonstrating the harrowing consequences of Trump’s thoughtless Executive Order.”

“The Constitution is clear: Congress, not the President, has the power of the purse. Trump’s attempt to redirect your tax dollars from their congressionally-determined purpose, is a clear and deliberate attack on our nation’s democracy, endorsed by his ultra-wealthy friends. While I am confident that this executive order will be shut down by the courts, the chaos and confusion it has caused is intentional and meant to divide us. It’s not just wrong - it’s downright unpatriotic.”

“Simply put: President Trump is trying to rewrite the rules of our freedoms: restricting free speech, whitewashing our history, and now, challenging our Constitutional checks and balances. This executive order is only the latest in his attempt to systematically dismantle the democracy that harbors the soul of our nation.”

“I call on the Trump Administration to rescind this overreaching executive order. Moreover, I encourage my colleagues across the aisle to condemn this funding freeze and the dangerous precedent it sets for our country.”
