Treasury announces Harriet Tubman will be on the front of newly-issued $20 bills
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Jack Lew announced yesterday that Harriet Tubman will replace Andrew Jackson on the new $20 bill. Prior to yesterday’s historic announcement, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) introduced legislation in April 2015, the Woman on the Twenty Act, H.R. 2147, that directs Treasury to add a woman to the $20 bill.
“I cannot think of a more deserving woman than Harriet Tubman to be the new face of the $20 bill,” Beatty said. “I want to thank Secretary Lew for working with me and other stakeholders to make our currency more reflective of our nation’s values, history and the people who made our country great. I also applaud Secretary Lew’s decision to put other notable women on the $5 and $10 bill.” Beatty continued, “I do hope, however, we will not have to wait until 2030 to see a woman on paper money. It is long overdue.”
According to the Department of Treasury, the new $20 will enter circulation no earlier than 2030. In addition to changing the $20 bill, Lew announced leaders of the women’s suffrage movement will be placed on the back of the $10 bill and civil rights-era leaders will be incorporated into the back of the $5 bill.
