Congresswoman Beatty Reflects on the Anniversary of January 6th

January 6, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) released the following statement on the two-year anniversary of the January 6th insurrection:

“On January 6, 2021, Americans watched in horror as armed insurrectionists—at the instigation of former President Trump—converged on our nation’s Capitol. Never in my wildest imagination would I have envisioned a day where I would have to shelter in place with my staff to protect ourselves from a violent mob of white supremacists. While we were fortunate to remain physically unharmed, the horrific memories will forever remain heavy on my heart and in my mind. As we reflect on this solemn day, let us honor the heroic sacrifices of our brave United States Capitol Police officers who risked their lives defending this institution. We are forever indebted to their service.

“Unfortunately, the attacks on our democracy did not end that day. In the years since January 6th, we have witnessed legislatures in states across this country—including in Ohio—pass measure after measure restricting the sacred right to vote. Today, as we continue our work to hold those responsible for the January 6th attack accountable, we must rededicate ourselves to the fight to fully restore the right to vote and ensure the preservation of our democracy.”
