Beatty Opposes Cuts to SNAP
(Washington, D.C.) – Congresswoman Beatty (OH-03) released the following statement in response to proposed cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2013.
Today, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-3) delivered remarks on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives expressing her opposition to the proposed cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) within the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2013, H.R. 1947.
SNAP is a powerful anti-poverty and anti-hunger program that lifted about 4.7 million Americans above the poverty line in 2011, including 2.1 million children. In Ohio, it aids 16% of the State’s population. The number of low-income working households utilizing SNAP benefits has risen dramatically over the past decade. The SNAP program is essential to the well-being of our most at-risk populations and the proposed cuts would be devastating.
“The proposed cuts will be detrimental to our most vulnerable populations as many of the poorest Americans depend on SNAP as their only form of income assistance. If we choose to turn our backs on low-income families, children, seniors and disabled, they would be severely disadvantaged.”
“It is unfair and unjust to consciously choose to cut funding to SNAP when we have the power to help those in need. I urge my colleagues to protect the most vulnerable Americans and save SNAP.”
