Congresswoman Beatty Condemns Legislative Attack on Reproductive Rights
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) issued the following statement regarding the House of Representatives' passage of two pieces of anti-abortion legislation, specifically H.R. 26, and H. Con. Res. 3.
“Not even one full week into the 118th Congress, Republicans have already launched a new full-scale attack on women’s reproductive freedoms. Make no mistake: Extreme MAGA Republicans will not stop until they have banned women’s reproductive rights nationwide with no exceptions," Rep. Joyce Beatty said. “In Ohio and across the country, we have already seen the horrifying consequences of the Roe reversal that disproportionately harm women of color – including new laws to arrest doctors and to punish women and those who help them. I am proud to stand firmly with my Democratic colleagues to continue fighting to protect every woman’s right to choose.”
H. Con. Res 3 condemns vandalism against pro-life facilities, groups, and churches without condemning threats and violence levied against abortion providers, staff, their patients, and abortion facilities. Full text of this legislation is availableHERE.
H.R. 26 restates current law requiring that doctors provide the same medical care for infants born during abortion procedures as they would other infants. Additionally, it would supersede a healthcare provider's medical expertise, requiring providers to transport infants to a hospital, even in cases that would not be in the best interest of the infant's health or the parents’ wishes. This legislation permits imposition of criminal penalties, including up to five years imprisonment, and acts as a precursor to criminalizing abortion nationwide and eliminating a woman’s right to choose her reproductive healthcare.
