Beatty Supports Bipartisan Funding Bill, Blasts Emergency Declaration

WASHINGTON, D.C.–The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.J.Res. 31, a bill to avert another costly government shutdown, by a vote of 300-128 on February 14, 2019. Today, President Trump signed the bill into law and then signed an executive order declaring a national emergency at the United States-Mexico border. In response, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) issued the following statement:

"I voted in support of the bipartisan, bicameral government funding bill because it will prevent another costly and unnecessary shutdown. This bill is not perfect, but compromise by its very nature means no one gets everything they want. However, the bill does provide much-needed resources to combat the opioid crisis and makes key investments in national security, infrastructure, and communities across the country.

With regard to President Trump taking the unprecedented step to declare a national emergency at the border, I will fully support the enactment of a joint resolution to terminate the emergency declaration. The president's declaration of a 'fake' national emergency is an abuse of his constitutional oath, and Trump should know that the Constitution specifically prohibits the president from spending money that has not been appropriated. This is a gross abuse of power that cannot be tolerated."
