Beatty Statement on the Historic Confirmation of Loretta Lynch

Senate vote follows unnecessary and partisan delays

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) applauds the long overdue Senate confirmation of Loretta Lynch, the first African-American woman, to be the next United States Attorney General. The Senate approved the nomination by a vote of 56-43. The historic confirmation of Loretta Lynch follows months of Rep. Beatty taking action and speaking out on the need for expedient action.

"After 165 days of unnecessary waiting, Loretta Lynch has finally been confirmed to be the next United States Attorney General. The American people, Members of Congress, and I have been urging the Senate to confirm this supremely qualified candidate and dedicated public servant for a critical position," said Rep. Beatty. "I thank all the stakeholders who united to put pressure on the Senate and kept media attention on Mrs. Lynch's historic confirmation. I am confident that Mrs. Lynch will be an excellent Attorney General and I thank Attorney General Holder for his outstanding service to our nation."

Rep. Beatty has been at the forefront of the Congressional efforts to confirm Loretta Lynch. Joining with her Delta Theta Sigma, Inc. sorors, Rep. Beatty attended confirmation hearings alongside Reverend Lorenzo Lynch (Loretta Lynch's father), Wade Henderson, and Elaine Jones. Rep. Beatty also spoke at press conferences and conducted media interviews in support of Mrs. Lynch. As recent as Wednesday, April 22, Rep. Beatty led a group of Black fraternity members on a march to Capitol Hill to push the Senate to vote on Mrs. Lynch's confirmation today.

"I am glad that the torch of excellence has been passed to our nation's top law enforcement official. Loretta Lynch, with her eminent qualifications and valuable experience undoubtedly will be a superb Attorney General in service to our country," said Rep. Beatty.
