Beatty Statement on Syrian Refugee Bill

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) voted against a bill that did not bolster America's security and fell short of addressing humanitarian concerns. The legislation, H.R. 4038, passed by a vote of 289-137. Beatty released the following statement after the vote:

"The safety and security of the American people is paramount as we address humanitarian concerns. This has been a difficult time for our nation as we grapple with the tragic events in Paris, Beirut, and other locations. While we should not live in fear, many are fearful today.

"For decades, America has welcomed millions of refugees escaping repression, terrorism, and genocide. We must remain true to our American values while embracing the most vulnerable –children, women, and the elderly— who faced brutality, violence, and death at the hands of ISIL and fled their homes for a safe place. H.R. 4038 does not bolster security for the American people nor address humanitarian concerns.

"The Democratic alternative, the Secure Refugee Process Act (H.R. 4079), of which I am an original co-sponsor, stands in stark contrast and is a pro-security, pro-compassion bill that would ensure the U.S. continues to maintain the most extensive interagency security screening process in the world to vet all people who seek safe harbor in our great nation."
