Beatty Statement on HUD Proposal to Raise Rent on Poorest Americans

Secretary Ben Carson is proposing dramatic changes to HUD's housing programs

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) proposed dramatic changes to federal housing programs, including increasing rent for individuals and families living in subsidized housing and tripling the minimum rent for millions of at-risk Americans. In response, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03), a member of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance, issued the following statement:

"I do not support the Trump Administration's proposal to require the poorest, most vulnerable Americans to pay up to 300 percent more in rent. I believe this move will take the ‘affordable' out of affordable housing for countless hardworking families, and I will do everything in my power to prevent this short-sighted, misguided decision from ever becoming reality."
