Beatty Statement on Confirmation of Senator Jeff Sessions as Attorney General

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On February 8, 2017, the U.S. Senate voted 52-47 to confirm Senator Jeff Sessions (AL) as the next United States Attorney General. Following the Senate confirmation, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) said:

"I believe the Attorney General has an obligation to ensure equal treatment and justice under the law for all Americans, no matter their gender, race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation or disability status. Instead of confirming a champion for all Americans, the Senate has confirmed an Attorney General whose record stands in stark contrast. Senator Jeff Sessions voted against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act and Voting Rights Act--the very laws he will now be responsible for protecting, defending and enforcing."
