Beatty's Anti-Human Trafficking Bill Included in Larger Measure Signed Into Law

Comprehensive law to help trafficking victims

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) applauded President Obama's signing comprehensive anti-human trafficking legislation, the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act, S. 178, into law. One of Beatty's top priorities in the 114th Congress was to pass her trafficking bill, H.R. 246 – and the omnibus package that was signed into law by President Obama late Friday evening included Beatty's bill and 9 other bipartisan House bills aimed at combatting the scourge of human trafficking.

"After a lot of hard work, I am pleased that this bill has been signed into law and will help make a difference. I thank advocates and legislators for making this possible, and I especially thank the victims for sharing their courage and experiences," said Rep. Beatty. "This is one victory in the battle to end human trafficking. I will continue working to end this heinous practice and support child sex trafficking victims so that they get the assistance they need to rebuild and rehabilitate."

A long-time advocate in combatting human trafficking, the portion of the law authored by Rep. Beatty would reduce the instances and impacts of child sex trafficking by de-criminalizing the behavior of trafficking victims and making it easier for people to report potential instances to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children Cyber Tipline.
