Beatty Highlighting Importance of Black History Month
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) continues to celebrate Black History Month throughout February. A leader in the African American community, Rep. Beatty commemorates the month in numerous ways and encourages Americans to continue striving for equality for all.
"Every February, we honor the great achievements and rich history of African Americans and the African American community," said Congresswoman Beatty. "We also reflect on the past indignities of slavery and segregation, prejudice and discrimination. That is why it is important that we take this time each year to recommit ourselves to the collective goal of ensuring equality and justice for all people."
To celebrate Black History Month Congresswoman Beatty:
- Supported U.S. District Attorney for the East District of New York, Loretta Lynch, by attending her U.S. Senate confirmation hearing alongside Delta Theta Sigma sorority sisters. Ms. Lynch is a member of the Delta Theta Sigma sorority. (1/28/2015)
- Toured the new Hale Black Cultural Center at The Ohio State University and discussed the importance of minority communities signing up for health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act. (2/6/2015)
- Spoke at the Columbus Mayor Coleman's United Negro College Fund luncheon about the importance of higher education and making education affordable. (2/6/2015)
- Delivered a public video message on the importance of Black History Month. (2/8/2015)
- Spoke in the U.S. House of Representatives in support of Awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to Selma March participants, which passed unanimously by a vote of 420-0. (2/11/2015)
- Published a special edition of the Beatty Bulletin states the timeline of the Civil Rights Movement and highlighting African American leaders in Ohio. (2/14/2015)
- Secured an amendment to a budget bill in the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services that would strengthen the Office of Minority and Women Inclusion. (2/13/2015)
- Led a Special Order Hour in the U.S. House of Representatives on "50 Years From Selma: Where We Were, Where We Are, Where We're Headed." (2/2/2015)
- Delivered the keynote address at Columbus Metropolitan Authority's Black History Month Celebration. (2/18/2015)
