Beatty Decries Dangerous Living Conditions for Children and Families in CBP Custody
WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) issued the following statement after the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General issued a "Management Alert" regarding the dangerous living conditions and prolonged detention of children and families in U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) custody:
"I am horrified by the images of mothers, children, and migrants seeking asylum being kept at the border—the deaths, the overcrowding, and the people unable to bathe for a month. I am also troubled by the Trump Administration's mean-spirited and heartless plan to impose half million-dollar fines on undocumented immigrants like Edith Espinal. We cannot turn a blind eye to these grave injustices. That is why I implore President Trump to reverse course, to treat all people with basic human decency and respect, and to finally get serious about working with Congress to reform our immigration system so families can stay together."
