Beatty Blasts Republican Attack on Protections for People with Pre-Existing Conditions

WASHINGTON, D.C.–Today, as oral arguments begin in Texas v. United States, a lawsuit to strike down the Affordable Care Act's protections for people with pre-existing conditions, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) blasted Republicans' newest attempt to strip healthcare from Americans with pre-existing conditions. The Republican and Trump Administration-backed lawsuit jeopardizes the healthcare of 130 million Americans, including 68 million women and girls, nationwide. In Ohio alone, the healthcare of more than 4.8 million Ohioans, including 626,200 children, could be dismantled if the lawsuit succeeds.

"Unsuccessful in their attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act and take away protections for pre-existing conditions in Congress, Republicans are now attempting to do the very same thing in the courts," Beatty said. "One thing is for sure, countless Central Ohioans' and hardworking American families' healthcare will never be safe as long as Republicans control Washington." Beatty continued, "That is why I am proud to stand with families across the nation to fight the latest GOP attack on healthcare, as well as to ensure that all people have access to the high-quality, affordable healthcare they need and deserve."

According to reports from the Center for American Progress, Republican efforts to eliminate protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions:

  • Jeopardizes the healthcare and financial stability of 4.8+ million Ohioans, including 626,200 children; and
  • Threatens healthcare coverage for countless women and girls, 50 percent of whom have pre-existing conditions.
