Congresswoman Beatty's Statement Against Government Shutdown

October 1, 2013

Joyce Beatty Statement Against Government Shutdown

On September 30, 2013 at midnight, the current continuing resolution expired, shutting down the United States government and consequently causing hundreds of thousands of middle-class workers to be furloughed immediately. This was done in a pointless attempt to stop the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The ACA is the law of the land which has been upheld by the Supreme Court and which is being implemented to the benefit of millions of Americans.

Unfortunately, certain Members of the House have refused to enact a clean Continuing Resolution or CR without inappropriate amendments that would delay the Affordable Care Act and force the majority of the House to bend to outrageous demands that have nothing to do with funding our government. Without a new continuing resolution being passed and signed into law by the deadline, all “non-essential” federal functions will be shut down until a new CR is enacted. This is not how our government should operate--where a few misguided, partisan-minded individuals get to threaten the sanctity of our economy and oppose the will of the majority of the American people.

During the government shutdown, please know that my Washington, DC and Columbus office will continue to work on behalf on the constituents of the 3rd Congressional District of Ohio. However, I am saddened to report that this unnecessary government shutdown will negatively impact many government services and benefits to the detriment of millions of American seniors, veterans and families. As official information may vary depending on the source, below please find a few links to helpful information regarding the impacts of the shutdown.

I urge Speaker Boehner, and other the House Republican leaders to work with the rest of Congress and to follow the will of the American people by ending their politically-manufactured government shutdown and pass a clean funding bill with all due speed.

Joyce Beatty

Member of Congress, OH-03
