Beatty Urges faster unveiling of new $20 bill
Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Jefferson Township, urged federal officials to speed up the re-design of the $20 bill which will feature Civil War-era abolitionist Harriet Tubman, saying she hopes “we will not have to wait until” 2030 when the new bill is expected to be in circulation.
Beatty who last year introduced a bill last year urging that a woman be placed on the $20 bill, thanked Treasury Secretary Jack Lew for “working with me and other stakeholders to make our currency more reflective of our nation’s values, history, and the people who made our country great.”
Lew announced this week that Tubman would replace former President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. But Treasury officials indicated it could take until 2030 before the new bill is in circulation.
