Congresswoman Beatty Reflects on Pride Month

June 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, the series of demonstrations widely regarded as the beginning of the modern gay rights movement. In the five decades since, the LGBTQ civil rights movement has made tremendous advancements, including the 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court Decision, which secured marriage equality for same-sex couples in all fifty states.

"It is inspirational to see how far the LGBTQ+ rights movement has come since the Stonewall riots," U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) said. "But we cannot look at marriage equality as the end of the road for the gay rights movement. This Congress, I was proud to help pass the Equality Act, which prohibits discrimination and segregation on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, while at the same time fighting the many anti-LGBTQ policies being championed by the Trump Administration. This Pride Month, I call on my colleagues and constituents to come together and show their pride in support of LGBTQ equality."
