Congresswoman Beatty Celebrates Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today, January 15, 2018, is Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service, the annual observance recognizing civil rights legend Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. To commemorate the occasion, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) issued the following statement:

"Revered Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. famously asked, ‘Life's most persistent and urgent question is: what are you doing for others?' 61 years later, and on what would have been Dr. King's 89th Birthday, people all across the country and globe are answering his call by pledging to make a difference in their community starting today. That's because, today is meant to be a ‘day on' of service, not a ‘day off.' In that spirit, I challenge each of you to answer Dr. King's call to service by pledging to make a difference. Whether that be by helping the sick, elderly and poor, calling out inequality, bigotry and hatred, volunteering, mentoring a young person, or even helping out in the community, you too can be a difference maker."

On Tuesday, January 9, 2018, Congresswoman Beatty spoke from the floor of U.S. House of Representatives to reflect on the tremendous impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. An archived recording of Beatty's speech can be viewed on her YouTube page. Additionally, Congresswoman Beatty produced a short video calling on all Americans to make a difference in their neighborhood and community on MLK Day of Service. This video can also be viewed on YouTube.
