Chair Beatty to Convene Emergency Meeting on Voting Rights
WASHINGTON, D.C. –Today, Wednesday, July 21, 2021, at 1:00 p.m., Members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) will hold a press conference with Black Women Leaders & Allies to demand votes on the For the People Act, H.R. 1, and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act, H.R. 4.
The For The People Act is a transformational voting rights, election integrity, anti-corruption reform bill that will restore democratic power to the American people. Passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on March 3rd, the comprehensive piece of legislation has languished in Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell’s (KY) self-professed ‘legislative graveyard’ ever since. The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act, most notably, would restore the preclearance provision of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, pushing back against numerous voter restriction laws being implemented in states across the country.
The press conference comes on the heels of CBC Chair Joyce Beatty’s (OH-03) arrest last week during a peaceful demonstration in the Hart Senate Office Building alongside members of Black Women Leaders & Allies. The group marched to raise awareness on voting rights and call attention to Senate Republicans’ refusal to engage meaningfully in drafting federal legislation to ensure that every American has equal access and opportunity to vote
