Rep. Joyce Beatty: Don’t Appoint My Ex-Colleague as Head of the Export-Import Bank
Add Rep. Joyce Beatty to the list of Democrats wary of former Rep. Scott Garrett serving as the president of the Export-Import Bank.
Beatty, a Jefferson Township Democrat, wrote a letter to Senate Banking Committee Chair Michael Crapo, R-Idaho, and Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, on Thursday urging them to oppose the confirmation of Garrett, who during his time in the House was a vocal opponent of the Export-Import Bank. She copied the letter to all members of the Senate Banking Committee.
“Not only did he repeatedly vote against legislation to reauthorize the Bank, but he also made several troublesome comments, such as describing the Bank as ‘crony capitalism,’ ‘taxpayer welfare,’ ‘un-American,’ and even suggesting that it brings harm to ‘American families on a daily basis,’” she wrote.
“Comments like these calls into question his commitment and dedication in carrying out his potential responsibilities as president of the Export-Import Bank.”
