HER STORY:

Joyce Beatty was once named one of Ebony Magazine's 150 Most Powerful African-Americans in the United States.

She is a native Ohioan who currently owns a small retail business in downtown Columbus. She has also been a professor at Sinclair Community College.

Joyce is a big supporter of the Congressional Black Caucus as well as the Office of Minority and Women Inclusion.

HER VIEWS:

Economy:

The Democratic Congresswoman is a staunch advocate for tax reform to lessen the gap between the rich and the poor in America.

The Senate GOP has officially passed its tax bill, but the fight is not over yet.

When it comes to the economy and taxes, Joyce opposes the Republican's recent budget resolution and disagrees with President Trump's budget request.

She believes that the tax cuts would only benefit the wealthiest Americans, while depriving seniors, students, veterans, the disabled, and working families of food, housing, jobs, and more.

Education:

Having previously worked on the faculty of a college, Joyce is passionate about raising students to be our nation’s future leaders.

Joyce’s experience working as a college instructor has given her unique insight into the need for education reform.

Joyce opposes Betsy DeVos being appointed to head the U.S. Department of Education, believing she is unqualified and on track to undercut the country's public education system.

Joyce also introduced a bill called the 21st Century STEM for Girls and Underrepresented Minorities Act, empowering school districts to engage underrepresented students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.

Environment:

Joyce strongly believes in protecting the environment, wildlife, and our natural resources. She is a huge promoter of policies that help reduce air pollution and protect our land and water.

Foreign Policy:

Joyce is committed to keeping Americans safe at home and abroad. She voted for the Iran Nuclear Agreement and believes the security of our nation requires strategic planning and working together with our allies.

Health Care:

When it comes to health care, Joyce believes all Americans should have access to affordable health care.

She is in favor of improving on the Affordable Care Act and did not support Republicans’ attempts to repeal and replace it.

Immigration:

Joyce does not support President Trump’s attempts to ban Muslims and refugees from coming to the United States, seeing it as unconstitutional and un-American. She supports protecting DACA "Dreamers" from being deported.

Women's Rights:

The Democratic Congresswoman is a staunch advocate for women's rights, supporting groups like the Office of Minority and Women Inclusion.

Joyce is pro-choice and supports access to safe, legal abortions without restrictions. She co-sponsored the Women’s Health Protection Act which banned anti-abortion limitations on services.

She has also been a longtime advocate to end human trafficking, introducing legislation that was signed into law by President Obama.
