Congresswoman Beatty Highlights Importance of Mental Illness Awareness Week

Oct 4, 2020

This week, from October 4th – October 10th, millions of Americans, nonprofits, and dedicated advocates are joining together to raise awareness, educate the public, fight stigma, and provide support for individuals living with mental health conditions. To honor the significance of Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW), U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) issued the following statement:

“In 2020 alone, over 44 million Americans will experience a mental health condition, and one in five Americans will be affected by a mental health condition in their lifetime. Sadly, many with mental health conditions feel marginalized and do not seek out assistance or help from their loved ones, friends or even mental health professionals. We need to change the perception of mental illness, and that perception will not change unless we act to change it. In that spirit, I urge my constituents and all Americans to speak out and be a resource for family, friends, and neighbors. Together, let’s end the stigma and provide support because mental illness affects everyone.”
