Beatty Votes in Favor of the Farm Bill Conference Report

(Washington, D.C.)Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) released the following statement detailing her support of the bipartisan, bicameral five-year farm bill compromise.

Today, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-3) stated she is pleased that the Conference Report to H.R. 2642, Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2013, represented a reasonable compromise. The report excludes the drastic $40 billion cut in the House-passed version of the farm bill and makes progress in addressing hunger and poverty by investing new resources in other nutrition programs.

The report included language to designate Central State as an 1890 Land Grant University, pursuant to the provisions of the Second Morrill Act of 1890. Land grant status will allow Central State to participate in U.S. Department of Agriculture programs, focus extension services in the crucial areas of community health and disease prevention, and foster partnerships with The Ohio State University, Ohio's only other existing land grant institution.

"This legislation is a positive step forward that invests in rural development, bio-based energy, conservation, and agricultural research and that will provide certainty and stability for families in need, for farming communities, and for our commodity markets."

"It was a special pleasure that Central State University became an 1890 land grant institution. Even after the passage of today's legislation, I will continue to champion for legislation that helps feed the poor."
