Congresswoman Beatty Introduces Stroke Month Resolution

House resolution would formally recognize May as "Stroke Awareness Month"

WASHINGTON, D.C.During May, like-minded stakeholders and leaders across the country are joining forces to raise greater awareness about stroke. In conjunction with the nationwide, month-long initiative, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) recently introduced H.Res. 337, a bipartisan resolution expressing support for the designation of May as "Stroke Awareness Month." The resolution is cosponsored by 14 Members of Congress including Central Ohio Congressman Pat Tiberi (OH-12) and is pending further consideration in the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

"As a stroke survivor, I know all too well the magnitude of this disease and its life-changing effects. Stroke touches hundreds of thousands of American families each year and can happen to anyone at any time," Beatty said. "Yet, far too many Americans are unaware of their risk of having a stroke—this has to change." Beatty continued, "One simple step we can do to help improve awareness and understanding is to designate the month of May as Stroke Awareness Month."

In addition to introducing H.Res. 337, Congresswoman Beatty spoke from the House Floor last week in recognition of Stroke Awareness Month and to encourage her colleagues to support the measure. She serves as Co-Chair of the Congressional Heart and Stroke Coalition and has also introduced the Return to Work Awareness Act, H.R. 1128, a bill to improve the employability of individuals affected by stroke, heart attack or other serious health issues. Further, Congresswoman Beatty is the lead Democrat on the Furthering Access to Stroke Telemedicine (FAST) Act, H.R. 1148, legislation to help more stroke victims gain access to fast, high-quality care, commonly called telestroke, and she has pushed for greater federal funding at the National Institutes for Health's National Institute of Neurological Disorders (NINDS).
