Congresswoman Beatty Heralds Historic House Passage of Equality Act

February 25, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. –Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Equality Act, H.R. 5, comprehensive civil rights legislation that prohibits discrimination against members of the LGBTQ+ community in employment, education, credit, jury service, federal funding, housing, and public accommodations. Reacting to the vote, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03), an original cosponsor of the Equality Act, issued the following statement:

"No one should lose their job, be kicked out of their home, forced to leave school, or sacrifice their livelihood because of who they love. Yet, in 2021, a person can get married on a Sunday and fired on Monday—or even face financial ruin—for that very reason. I am proud to stand in strong solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community in Ohio's Third Congressional District and across this great nation, and I call on the Senate to pass the Equality Act quickly. Let's finally guarantee that all Americans are treated equally under the law."
