Beatty Marks One Year Anniversary of the Charleston Nine

One year ago, on June 17, 2015, nine parishioners of Mother Emanuel AME Church were killed in Charleston, South Carolina. Today, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) issued the following statement in response:

"One year ago today, nine Americans were senselessly gunned down as they prayed at Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina. In the days that followed, the families of the Charleston Nine exemplified all the qualities that make our country strong. Rather than letting hatred win, they showed love and forgiveness, and united Americans from every walk of life in the process.

"We cannot let the deaths of the Charleston Nine be in vain. Their lives and the countless others lost as a result of gun violence demand Congress immediately act. Now is the time to work together. We cannot wait for another Charleston or Orlando to take action. Americans everywhere are clamoring for common sense solutions."
